Haridwar, Gate to Lord Vishnu, is an ancient, religious city of Hindus. The holy river Ganga enters Indo Gangetic plains from here, hence it is also Ganga-dwar or Har ki Pauri. When you reach Haridwar, the smell of incense and the chiming of bells will make you feel that the whole city is one big temple. This ancient city has mention in the ancient scriptures of Hinduism. It is one of the 4 cities where Kumbh Mela takes place in rotation. TheĀ other three being Ujjain, Nasik and Allahabad.
Haridwar is also the base camp of the Char Dham yatra in Uttarakhand. The main temples in and around are: Mansa Devi, Bharat Mata Mandir, Chandi Devi Mandir etc. If as a traveler you are seeking peace and tranquility, Haridwar is the place for you. The sacred temples, the exuberance of the devotees after they take a dip in the holy Ganges, will rejuvenate you. The Ganga Arti at Haridwar is a sight to behold, the priests lined on one side of the bank, holding massive artis with the chanting of mantras, is an experience. Later after the arti, the devotees also float there small diyas on the river, with their hopes and wishes for a better future.
