Destination: Dharamshala
The meaning of dharamshala is a rest house for spiritual pilgrims. Dharamshala is divided into two parts, lower Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. It is steep uphill drive of 18 km from Kangra. The shadow of the Dhauladhar Mountain adds to the beauty.
Starting from Kangra valley onwards, tea plantations accompany the drive. As you drive, the lovely treks made enticing by the mules loaded with cargo going up and down narrow zigzag roads will make you want to start the trek.
Mcleodganj is the seat of Dalai Lama. Here, Dalai Lama runs a Government in exile. Often referred to as Little Lhasa, the Tibetan refugees settled here after Dalai Lama sought refuge in 1959. The siteseeing spots are: Bhagsu Nag temple, the Dal Lake, Kareri lake, etc. But it is more of a trekkers delight.
Dharamsala is at an altitude of 1,400 m, while McLeod Ganj is at around 1,750 m. Both of them are considerably cooler than the plains below. Temperatures in January dip below freezing, while June rises to 38°C. The monsoon season from July to September is very wet. And even in March, you will still need a heavy winter coat.
We recommended that you spend 2 days in the city to imbibe the spirit of Dharamshala and enjoy every aspect of the place during your stay. And another 2-3 days travelling to the nearby attractions which have their own unique features. The variety Dharamsala offers for sightseeing includes temples, churches and monasteries to museums, ancient towns and places of natural beauty. Every season and every spot has its own special offering.
